How Vendors Use "AI Investment" to Justify Price Increases

Rising AI infrastructure cost is real for many vendors. Whether it maps onto the percentage on your renewal invoice is a separate question.

I've watched how quickly a genuine cost increase can turn into a convenient justification for one that goes well beyond it. Rising AI infrastructure costs are real for many vendors right now. Whether that reality maps cleanly onto the specific percentage showing up on your renewal invoice is a separate question, and one worth actually asking.

Why this justification is so hard to challenge

Unlike a straightforward list-price increase, "our AI costs have gone up" is difficult for a buyer to verify or dispute directly. You don't have visibility into the vendor's actual infrastructure spend, so the number they attach to it is effectively unverifiable from your side of the table. That asymmetry makes it a convenient justification, true or not, for pricing decisions that may have other drivers behind them as well.

One number you cannot evaluate, or two you can

    As quoted

    +14%

    "Rising AI infrastructure costs"

    Nothing here is separately contestable.

    Itemised on request
    Base subscription+5%
    AI feature component+9%

Now one line can be questioned on its own terms.

One number you can't evaluate, or two you can.

What to actually ask when this comes up

    • What specifically changed: a new AI feature you didn't have before, increased usage of an existing one, or a general cost pass-through unrelated to your usage
    • Whether the increase is tied to your actual consumption of AI features, or applied flat regardless of whether you use them
    • Whether the AI-related cost can be broken out separately from the base subscription increase, so each can be evaluated on its own terms
    • If you don't use the AI features being cited, why the increase applies to your account at all

Why segmentation matters more than outright rejection

Not every AI-cost justification is unreasonable, but accepting it as a blanket explanation for an increase, without asking whether it's proportional to your actual usage, cedes a negotiating point that's often more contestable than it first appears. Asking for the breakdown, and specifically whether the increase scales with your usage of AI features, is usually more productive than simply pushing back on the number itself.
