This Month in Renewals: Two Real Deadlines Worth Acting on Now

Most of this series covers patterns. This edition covers two specific dates that affect a budget decision in the next several weeks.

This Month in Renewals, August 2026, Edition 5. Both items below are concrete enough to act on directly rather than file away as market context.

Deadline one: Microsoft 365 E7 promotional pricing

Microsoft's own Partner Center bulletin this month confirmed that Microsoft 365 E7 promotional pricing retires on 1 October 2026. Separately, E3 promotional pricing was extended through 31 December 2026. If your organisation has an active E7 evaluation or purchase in progress, or has been considering the bundle that combines E5, Copilot and additional agent and identity products, the promotional window closes in weeks rather than months. If you are eyeing E3 instead, the pressure is lower since that promotion now runs to year-end.

Two clocks running at different speeds

Two promotional windows on very different clocks.

Deadline two: GitHub Copilot's promotional AI Credits

Since GitHub's June 2026 shift to usage-based AI Credits billing, existing Business and Enterprise customers have been receiving promotional 2x credit allowances, $30 in credits for Business instead of the standard $19 and $70 instead of $39 for Enterprise, specifically to smooth the transition. That window was tied to the June to August 2026 transition period. If your usage has been running comfortably within the promotional allowance, it is worth checking now whether that comfort margin disappears once standard allowances resume, before it shows up as an unexpected overage on a future invoice.

Why these deadlines deserve more urgency than they get

Pricing deadlines like this rarely get covered with real specificity. Most coverage of AI pricing news stays at the trend level rather than naming an actual date that affects a real budget decision this quarter.

What to actually do this week

    • For M365, confirm with your Microsoft account team or reseller whether an E7 evaluation currently in progress can be locked in before 1 October, and get that confirmation in writing rather than a verbal assurance
    • For GitHub Copilot, pull your organisation's actual credit consumption over the past two months
    • Compare it against the standard non-promotional allowance rather than the current promotional one, so you know your real exposure before the promotion lapses
    • Where the gap is material, raise it with the vendor now rather than after the first overage invoice

    Deciding without rushing the decision

A promotional deadline is a real constraint and also a pressure tactic, and separating those two is the practical task. Ask the seller in writing what the price becomes after the date passes, and whether the offer has been extended in previous cycles. Then decide on the merits: whether the entitlement is something teams already use, what the twelve-month cost looks like against current spend, and whether committing now removes flexibility you will want when the next tier appears. If the deal only makes sense because of the deadline, that is a signal to let it pass. If it makes sense anyway, the deadline is simply a reason to finish the paperwork this month rather than next quarter.
